Assists the laboratory by performing phlebotomies and all standard laboratory procedures.

I CLINICAL PROCESS & PRACTICE SKILLS
Fully competent in primary role on unit; performs patient and family assessment and problem identification, plans care accordingly, implements and evaluates plan of care so that problems are resolved.

Records pertinent clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements, professional standards and hospital policy.
Adheres to federal, state and hospital rules and regulations concerning HIPAA privacy and security.
Follows Hospital compliance plan and policies, including the Code of Conduct.
Participates in required training for compliance related activities (HIPAA, Compliance, Patient Safety, TJC, etc.)

VI UNIT SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Exercises the most desirable customer service demeanor and professionalism in all communications, duties and attire while interfacing with patients, physicians, staff, business-related contacts and visitors. Is thoroughly versed in Hospital and applicable HIPPA regulations and is especially sensitive to, and mindful of, patient confidentiality in all scenarios. Acknowledge and greets customers in a courteous manner with-in 15 seconds of presentation. Responds in a courteous manner to all in-person contacts, greets all patients, staff, and general public as they enter and leave the hospital. Ensures customers are informed of procedures, anticipates customer needs, communicates if delays occur and provides updated information. Work with customers to satisfy or address their needs while waiting procedures. Seek to provide assistance with special problems or complaints
Answers all incoming external and internal calls by clearly stating the facility and employee name, screens calls, refers them to the appropriate department or person, and paging if necessary
Performs in-patient, out-patient and emergency room phlebotomies using established laboratory techniques, including proper needle disposal and safety measures, IV starts with competency, documents specimen rejection, responsiveness to prioritize workload
Perform laboratory procedures as assigned, for specimen handling and processing, sending out reference labs and protocols, documented training and certified in packaging and shipping of infectious material following state, federal and local regulations, test analysis, reporting, maintaining records of patients test results, assisting pathologist for frozen sections
Proficient in entering and understanding Laboratory orders including standing orders, scheduling protocols autologous, therapeutic, outpatients and coordinates with diagnostic scheduling, diagnostic coding, CPT's, ICD9, physician authorization per AVH bylaws, specialized testing and kit orders, misc. orders, primary reference lab protocols, process and assist specimen processing. Informs and educates patients on all new insurance information updates and mandatory Advanced Beneficiary Notice Form, Medically Necessity requirement through Medicare and Managed care providers, and scheduling protocols
Delivers, documents, and oversees patient care in accordance with AVH policy, procedures, protocol, and CAP, AABB, FDA or CMS standard interpretative. Demonstrates ability to prioritize all aspects of patient safety and the national Safety Goal requirements. (Hand washing, 2 identifiers and armbands, and reporting of critical values) Participates in overall department and facility quality improvement plan as requested
Implements correct charges procedures and monitors daily for accurate charging in the department. Participates to prioritize any charge master changes, corrections, updates, or additions

- Familiarity with medical terminology and hospital procedures.
- Working knowledge of reagent stability and storage. LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATIONS
- Certified Phlebotomist or at least three years phlebotomy experience and knowledge of the latest phlebotomy technique preferred and encouraged within one year of employment.
- Current BLS Certification within six months of hire. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
