Job Description:

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office is seeking an experienced Patrol Sergeant to lead a team of dedicated deputies.Summary:Under direction, the Patrol Sergeant plans, directs, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities; serves as watch commander on an assigned shift; oversees and participates in all work activities; assumes responsibility for assigned special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities; coordinates activities with other agencies; and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:--- Participates in the leadership and professional development of subordinates through constant communication and evaluation of daily activities; trains and evaluates assigned personnel; assists with training and orientation of new employees; provides trainings, guidance, and counseling to assigned personnel; promotes career development of subordinates.--- Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of sworn law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities.--- Serves as first level supervisor/Watch Commander for an assigned shift; prepares and administers briefings; assigns daily patrol activities; supervises and directs sworn staff and activities on assigned shift; conducts personnel, equipment, and building, vehicle, and equipment inspections.--- Prepares, processes, and maintains a variety of written reports and records pertaining to assigned activities including daily activity reports; completes payroll for assigned personnel for submission to Finance.--- Reviews and approves incident reports, required forms, summons, records, and related documents prepared by subordinates to ensure accuracy and timely completion; corrects or instructs officers to make corrections.--- Coordinates law enforcement activities with other units in the Office, and/or other County departments or divisions; coordinates functions of the unit with other law enforcement agencies.--- Conducts a continuing review of assigned activities to identify problems and develop recommendations for improving services.--- Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishes schedules and methods for providing effective law enforcement services; implements approved policies and procedures.--- Interprets, conveys, and ensures implementation of agency policies, procedures, and methods; ensures that personnel have clear guidelines of authority and responsibility.--- Responds to major crimes, accident scenes, and emergencies; assumes initial command; establishes field command posts and implements the Incident Command System; may act as incident commander until such time as a more suitable or appropriate person assumes command.--- Assumes responsibility for assigned collateral functions including special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities; supervises specialized teams and services including Airport Law Enforcement, Field Training Officers, and related assignments.--- Provides a full range of administrative support to management staff; conducts a variety of organizational studies, investigations, and operational studies; recommends modifications to programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate; prepares departmental policies and procedures; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.--- Participates in budget development and administration; prepares and plans budget requests for assigned operations and special details; participates in the development of grant applications and the administration of grants.--- Conducts internal affairs investigations and investigations of citizen complaints as necessary.--- Participates in shift activities as necessary including enforcing local and state laws; issues citations and makes arrests.--- Speaks before groups and represents the Office and County at meetings and conferences.--- Supervises and participates in the preparation of reports for various cases including cases going to trial; prepares supplemental reports as required; appears in court to present evidence and testimony as required.--- Supervises and participates in traffic control activities and accident investigations; reviews and corrects all Office traffic collision reports and towed vehicle reports; reviews and makes decisions on request for early release of towed vehicles; responds to call outs on major injury or death accident investigations; responds to questions from citizens concerning traffic related issues.--- Oversees and supervises a variety of special services, programs, projects, and units as directed; participates in the Office's public relations function; participates as needed in background investigations for new hires; participates in the coordination of special events; handles miscellaneous complaints and projects for the Sheriff's office as needed.--- Performs continual performance evaluations for patrol staff.--- Performs related duties as required.--- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.recblid ign55fl3oesvr302eru8dw33h5yao7
