Job Overview:

The Operating Room Coordinator provides both clinical and administrative support to Perioperative Services and The Steadman Clinic Service Line. This position will also provide support to Perioperative Service and Administrative Leadership with staff education, service line initiative implementation, and act as a conduit with the Steadman Clinic and all other specialties, Surgeons and Anesthesia regarding Ortho Service Line. This position will be in the call rotation but not on the schedule for staffing in Perioperative Services.

Primary Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with Physician offices to enhance appropriate planning and scheduling of cases. Functions as a hub of flow and communication in Perioperative Services for staff, patients, visitors, physicians and other AVH departments.
  • Provides clinical support for OR: Monitors all scheduled cases, Reviews scheduling sheet for accuracy of cases booked and preference cards assesses special requests and supply needs for scheduled cases. Provides Ortho and all other specialty expertise to assist in the elevation of Orthopedic and all other specialty practice and standardization. Supports Perioperative Services staff in orientation, standardization, training, and case performance in Ortho and all other specialties.
  • Acts as the liaison and point person among physician, physician office, OR, materials, management, to facilitate a seamless planning process. Works with The Steadman Clinic and all other specialty Surgeons/Leadership and Designated Perioperative Services Educator/Director to research and provide national best practice to Perioperative Services staff.
  • Provides routine, approved information, through the individual service lines and via telephone as needed. Functions as a conduit with The Steadman Clinic, and all other specialty Surgeons and Anesthesia regarding Ortho Service Line, Surgeons and PAs as needed to provide consistent information and communication.
  • Manages preference cards to optimum efficiency. Network with Materials Management to ensure appropriate supplies are available for the day of surgery. Ensure availability of Implant/grafts. Ensure needed instruments are available for the cases and loaners are available. Ensure appropriate vendors are contacted and available as needed.
  • Collaborate with Leadership to support OR efficiency. Assist in daily planning of staffing needs. Ensure that needed equipment is available in OR rooms. Assist with special needs, equipment and supplies.
  • Support OR team throughout the day in areas such as opening rooms, facilitating turnover and throughput. Facilitate effective handoff techniques between care team. Ensure appropriate next day plans are made by collaborating with key players.
  • Provides educational support for the departments in conjunction with Clinical Resource Coordinator and Director through needs assessment as well as facilitating or providing in-services such as introduction of new equipment and supplies. Participates in audits to ensure compliance in best practices and outcomes. Assist in Joint Commission, State and hospital mandated in-services.
  • Facilitate implementation of best practices as they become available into the OR environment.
  • Communicates well with various hospital departments and nursing units, special needs to Specialty Leads/ Charge RN clearly and efficiently, and supports communication to appropriate personnel and departments of an add-ons or patient transfer.
  • Adheres reliably to all accepted patient safety standards.
  • Identifies and promotes new learning around changing patient safety standards of practice
  • Follows all security, confidentiality, and privacy policies.
  • Performs scrub intra-operatively to support/assess the assigned scrub role and to assist in consistent efficiency metrics for all scrubs and to standardize process from the scrub perspective.
  • Performs clinical support and other duties as needed or requested in a timely manner; this includes ordering of Ortho and departmental supplies, submitting departmental work orders and other Perioperative Services specific needs.
  • Promptly answers questions staff, surgeons, leadership and other AVH departments and immediately notifies Charge Nurse, and/or Perioperative Leadership/Director of issues.
  • Is familiar with current communication system to support The Steadman Clinic, Perioperative Services and Administration as needed.
  • Tracks tissue ordering, arrival and use. Also monitors expiration and consignment needs for Perioperative Services
  • Cooperates and assists with maintaining training of new departmental employees related to standardizations, competencies and orientation.
  • Daily duties include: monitoring of OR Schedule, daily support of all specialties working directly with the Charge RN, daily rounding and support in OR of the Ortho Service Line.
  • Actively participates in department meetings with attendance of 80% or better. Read and respond appropriately to departmental email and postings. Maintains awareness of patient satisfaction, staff and Surgeon/Anesthesia improvement initiatives.


RN Only Duties:

  • In addition to the above duties: RN duties provide a more in-depth level of care in the position.


  • Assist with the patient PAT process and coordination of pre-op needs.
  • Acts as a liaison regarding patient information with Anesthesia
  • Assists with physician's orders transitioning from clinic to OR
  • Provides Nursing approved information, through the individual service lines and via telephone as needed. Functions as a conduit with The Steadman Clinic, and all other specialty Surgeons and Anesthesia regarding Ortho Service Line, Surgeons and PAs as needed to provide consistent information and communication.
  • Provides educational support for the department and OR nursing staff.
  • Assists in Inter-departmental Patient reporting (information hand-off)
  • Performs intraoperative support/assessment to assigned RN role and to assist in consistent efficiency metrics for all Perioperative Services RN and to standardize processes.


Minimum Qualifications, Certs/Licenses & Requirements:

  • Current Colorado RN License (or compact) required
  • 2 years of OR experience as a circulator and scrub experience required
  • Required certifications through American Heart Association:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
  • Strong interpersonal skills required
  • Administrative & general office experience preferred
  • Ability to concentrate and show attention to detail required
  • Ability to work independently required


Benefits & Compensation:

Our hire-in rates of pay are based on years of relevant experience. Listed below are our hire-in rates for the position, which includes: minimum pay (no relevant experience) and mid-point (12 or more years).

Minimum = $47.11/hr

Mid-Point = $53.96/hr
