Job Description:

The Mechanic will work as part of a team and be responsible for maintenance and repair of all County vehicles including, Airport, Road & Bridge, Landfill, Sheriff, Open Space, Aspen Fire, Ambulance, along with may other departments and vehicles. This position requires a Commercial Driver Licence within 6 months of hire. The work schedule is 4 ten hour shifts per week at our Fleet facility that is based outside of Aspen, across the highway from Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs preventative maintenance and repair on assigned vehicles and equipment; tags out of service issues and informs the Fleet Supervisor. Duties may vary according to job assignment. Performs Department of Transportation inspections on heavy equipment and emergency equipment to include fire trucks, snow plows, and ambulances. Completes steel welding and fabrication and aluminum welding. Maintains repair notes, and data entry in to Fleet Management system. Participates in snow removal and yard clean-up of shop grounds. Works on a variety of tasks as required and assigned by Supervisor. Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Required Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Colorado Driver's License (or be able to obtain within the first 6 months) and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record. ASE certifications preferred. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of: Manual hydraulic break systems; power, air, and anti-locking break systems; electrical systems. Safety policies, procedures, and practices. EPA regulations for spill containment and disposal of petroleum products used in a shop environment. Automotive repair and maintenance methods. Trades techniques, materials, and practices related to automotive and mechanical repair work. Knowledge of (Job Class Standard): County policies and procedures. State and federal laws and regulations governing work performed Record keeping and records management rules and standards. Skill in: Reading and interpreting operation and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Diagnosing and repairing vehicles. Using common shop tools safely. Operating a computer with intermediate level proficiency. Skill in (Job Class Standard): Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations. Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds. Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions. Utilizing standard personal computer software programs and specialized state and County software. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Physical Demands and Working Environment: Work is performed in a mechanical shop with some exposure to inclement weather, potentially dangerous machinery and tools, airborne particles, and fumes.
